San Pablo district was first mentioned around 1818 and 1819. Its original name was Sabanilla de Villalobos but until September 1818 is changed to San Pablo de Heredia. San Pablo is the first district in the canton of San Pablo. This district is considered 100% urban and includes neighborhoods like Urbanización Las Brizas, Cruces, Las Joyas, Los Hidalgos, etc. The mayor of the canton is Bernardo Porras López, as a part of the PUSC political party, and it stands for Partido Unidad Social Cristiana.
According to the INEC Costa Rica, about 20000 people live in the canton San Pablo and in the district of San Pablo, 4500 people. It counts with plenty of schools, public and private, like el Colegio Europeo, Centro Educativo Mundo Unido, etc.
This district offers a Firefighter Station, La Cruz Roja and police which makes it a great neighborhood for families to live here, residentials like Villa adobe and condominiums like El Prado.
The canton and the district of San Pablo is one of the most “complete” districts in Costa Rica, and thanks to its town-hall San Pablo’s money flow is constant, because of the donations in the churches, medical care, and the sport area.
El Centro Cultural provides programs for San Pablo’s citizens of self-defense, support for women who had suffered from any type of abuse and for men, they have talks about domestic violence and how can they prevent it. It also offers support groups for alcoholics and drug-addicts.
The Municipalidad de San Pablo organizes sport activities and games for disabled children who need dynamic and social events. They are also in the process of rebuilding the game area for kids, so is a space that can be well use.
Mascaradas, Celebración del cantonato, and other festivals, are examples of some activities and celebrations the districts bring to its population.
Other than schools and educational institutions in San Pablo, we have a variety of public services available for all the residents in this canton for example La Cruz Roja de San Pablo, Área de Salud San Pablo, Equipo Básico de Atención Integral de Salud (EBAIS), Delegación de la Fuerza Pública, el Centro de educación y nutrición, Oficina de Correos de Costa Rica, Oficina de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (distributes potable water throughout the canton), and we also have the Policía Municipal. Other than this we have public transport, private transport systems, electrical and water services, and sports and recreative centers.
Among the health services in San Pablo, we pretty much have the ones mentioned before: La Cruz Roja de San Pablo, Área de Salud San Pablo, Equipo Básico de Atención Integral de Salud (EBAIS), etc. The main economic activity in the canton of San Pablo de Heredia is the related to the activities of sale of goods and services as well as the production of coffee cultivation, an activity that has been reduced in recent years due to the change in land use to make way for housing development. In the last presidential elections in San Pablo in 2018, there were 16,307 votes (74.3%) and an abstention of 5,643 (25.7%) (in the district San Pablo: 12,276 votes (74,4%) and an abstention of 4221 (25,6%)), judging by the percentages and statistics of each category, you could say the Canton and district of San Pablo, has a pretty good voting rate, although we all agree that it could improve much more.
As we mentioned before, San Pablo district organizes sport activities, including ones specialized for disabled people. Lately, because of the pandemic they haven’t redone it.
Even though San Pablo has one of the best municipalities in Costa Rica, it has a big net of drug trafficking and a high rate of homicide. The last one reported was in December of last year.
Currently San Pablo is working getting the “Reconocimiento de Derechos a las personas con Discapacidad” which is a social project that offers “tools” for disabled people and their families so they can also have an active citizen participation.
